Network Rail – Garsdale Signal Box

Network Rail – Garsdale Signal Box

Structural Repairs/Refurbishment Works
Value: £275,000 | Duration: 4 Months

Having identified the signal box structure as unstable and at a very high risk of collapse onto the surrounding steep slope, Network Rail awarded MFG Construction the responsibility of identifying the most appropriate solution to address this major problem. A very highly technical and specialist structural solution to stabilise the building was developed and an appropriate project plan agreed.

The principal works carried out included:

  • Underpinning of the signal box including a piling system with a steel internal ‘lattice’ support framework system to stabilise and hold the signal box in place
  • Full renovation and refurbishment of the building including window replacement, new slate roof, plastering and flooring etc
  • Re-decoration and painting internally and to the external façade

Recognition of the innovative design and build solution to this project was recognised by the Institution of Civil Engineers – North West, and an article was included in their Spring 2014 Newsletter.
